During our academic year 2009-2010, our upper elementary class attended the Montessori Model United Nation program which is held yearly in New York. The students with the Montessori Model United Nation program chose a country based on the number of students attending the program.
The Montessori Model United Nations program enables students to explore the world and to understand why education is the path toward peace. The students developed position papers based on environmental
issues, poverty of women and children, social, humanitarian, cultural subjects, and sustainable use of land and water.
During the model United Nation, the children write "white papers" (proposed resolutions) and vote on the proposals. The final resolutions are then presented to the secretary General.
We plan to repeat this program every three years.
